FC-620S Low Temperature Fluid Loss Additive Supports Stable Offshore Well Cementing

As offshore oil and gas exploration continues to expand, cementing operations are facing more demanding requirements for slurry stability, fluid loss control and compatibility with seawater. Low-temperature wells can be particularly challenging because cement slurry needs to maintain suitable flowability and develop sufficient early strength while controlling free water during placement.

To address these requirements, Yantai Jiuyu Chemical Technology Co., Ltd. has developed the Low Temperature Fluid Loss Additive FC-620S, a polymer-based cementing additive designed for offshore oil well cementing applications. The product is formulated using AMPS and AM monomers and is suitable for seawater-based cement slurry systems where salt tolerance and stable slurry performance are important.

Improving Fluid Loss Control in Offshore Cementing

During cement placement, excessive filtrate loss can change slurry properties and increase the possibility of free-water separation or fluid migration into the formation. These problems may affect cement placement and the final sealing performance of the cement sheath.

FC-620S works by adsorbing onto cement particles and helping retain water within the slurry. This provides effective fluid loss control while maintaining good slurry dispersion. According to the product's laboratory data, a Class G cement system containing seawater, FC-620S and defoamer achieved an API fluid loss of no more than 50 mL at 80℃ and 6.9 MPa.

Designed for Seawater-Based Cement Slurry

One of the practical requirements of offshore cementing is compatibility with saline water. The AMPS/AM polymer structure of FC-620S provides resistance to highly mineralized seawater, allowing the additive to maintain stable performance when used in seawater cement formulations.

The additive also provides a useful dispersion effect, making it suitable for cement systems containing a relatively high proportion of solid or ultrafine materials. It can be combined with commonly used cementing additives such as dispersants, defoamers and retarders to develop slurry systems according to different well conditions.

Supporting Early Cement Strength Development

Fluid loss control is only one part of cementing performance. The cement slurry must also maintain an appropriate thickening time during placement and develop adequate compressive strength after setting.

Laboratory testing of the FC-620S formulation showed an initial consistency of ≤30 Bc at 80℃, a thickening time of ≥60 minutes under the specified test conditions, and 24-hour compressive strength of ≥14 MPa. Free water was controlled to ≤1.0 mL in the same test system.

These characteristics make the additive suitable for offshore cementing projects where fluid loss control, slurry flowability and early strength development need to be considered together.

A Practical Cementing Additive for Offshore Applications

The development of FC-620S reflects the increasing demand for specialized cementing additives in offshore oilfield operations. With its combination of fluid loss control, salt tolerance and dispersion performance, the Low Temperature Fluid Loss Additive provides a practical option for seawater-based cement slurry systems.

As offshore wells become more technically demanding, selecting a fluid loss additive that matches the cement system, temperature and salinity conditions can help improve slurry stability and cementing reliability.
